Geneseo Central School District
The Geneseo Central School District enrolls students in grades K-5 in an Elementary School and grades 6-12 in a Middle School/High School. The adjoining buildings and grounds contain a 600-seat auditorium, a fitness center, two gymnasiums, playing fields, a lighted stadium for football and soccer, an all-weather track, and a competition indoor pool. Along with a strong emphasis on the core subject areas, Geneseo Central offers foreign language classes to students in grades 6-12 and the music and visual arts departments provide all students with a strong background in the arts. Each classroom has networked computers for student use, in addition to computer labs and a media center. New science rooms have wireless access between rooms for student use. The school district also provides counselors, a school psychologist, and a school social worker.
SUNY Geneseo
The State University of New York at Geneseo (SUNY Geneseo) was founded in 1871 as the Wadsworth Normal and Training School and became a state liberal arts college in 1948. It is the most selective among the SUNY comprehensive colleges. A distinguished faculty characterized by National and SUNY teaching awards instructs students with outstanding high school records resulting in a 79% college graduation rate. In Fall 2008, enrollment was 5,585 students (5,367 full-time undergraduates). National recognition includes Phi Beta Kappa Chapter (first among the SUNY comprehensive colleges) and accreditation by the International Association for Management Education. Kiplinger ranked Geneseo No. 2 best value among the nation's public colleges and universities for out-of-state students. In its 2009 rankings, U.S. News & World Report names SUNY Geneseo one of 70 in the nation on its list of “Up and Coming Schools,” singled out for “promising and innovative changes in academics, faculty, students, campus or facilities.” In general rankings, it again placed #2 in the North. College students and faculty are an important part of the Geneseo community, and in turn, the College serves as a cultural and recreational center for the residents of Livingston County and the surrounding area, offering many plays, concerts, athletic events, art exhibits and performances.
